Director of Health, Safety & Wellbeing, National Highways

As National Highways Director of Health, Safety and Wellbeing, Mel brings more than 20 years of extensive operational experience to the role.  Mel specialises in leading in health, safety and wellbeing for large and complex operations – and across a diverse highways sector supply chain - with teams that are public facing within a 24/7, 365 days a year, safety critical service environment.

Mel believes in building excellence through diversity and inclusion, founding National Highways women’s network, which won Best Public Sector Employee Network at the Employers Network for Equality and Inclusion Awards 2020, and winning the Diversity Champion award at the 2021 Chartered Institute for Logistics and Transportation awards. Mel also established and chaired the National Highways Roads for All Forum, bringing together representative groups and delivering service improvements to better the journey experiences of disabled and vulnerable road users.  Mel was awarded an OBE in 2025 for services to the road network.
